"Of Agony and Forgiveness"

BIO

David Rodriguez is an amateur photographer and a local, Long Beach, California Heights resident. He picked up a camera over a year ago in search of a creative outlet.

You’ll find David shooting throughout Long Beach along some of his favorite spots – along the Los Angeles River, across the bay from Long Beach on Queens Way, on one of his favorite neighborhoods, Retro Row on 4th Street, and along many of Long Beach’s bike trails.

David carries a camera in his pocket on most days and takes various pictures on Los Angeles’ Metro Rail system and in one of his favorite spots in LA – Union Station.

His belief is: Shoot from the angle and position, and compose it in a way that is not the obvious one.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Since the early seventies my research has led me to a continual exploration of the book as an Art form. In my books or pages the tactile values of materials are found in each and every sheet of paper that is torn and worked upon with such patient care so as to lay bare the innermost fibers, to feel its textures, its porosity, the very tissue of its surface.

The non-books or rather the non-readable books that I contemplate as extension of the perspective of both mind and memory, set out to recount a happening, a state of affairs or a journey within the page or through the pages. The page is therefore the chosen setting for any hypothetical adventure you may embark upon or any hypothetical message you may be seeking: the blank page thus represents the virgin void of mental space. In this way the progressive cutting, this virtual inter-framing between one page and another, opens up upon the perspective against which and within which the mind can roam at will.

The sequence of the pages, which act as the filters/screens of an unidentifiable

complex  machinery, unfolds with kinetic rhythm as you turn the pages, so these books become the arena within which to unwind your mind rather than the stage for grasping codified messages. The tearing of the paper is never the outcome of an aggressive approach but stems rather from studied feeling and touching, from physical contact with both the material and reality at the same time, as a step towards thinking once again in tactile terms.

The representation of the Symbols represents the many complex aspects of reality, as a tool to transform Energy. C.G.Jung:On Psychic Energy.

Symbols and diagrams are sometime used to explain, through the golden proportions and sacred geometry, the relationships that exist within Human Nature and the universe.

When I start a work of art, there is an empty space, a void, and I search how to

balance form with emptiness, knowing when one has ” says ” enough. The shapes that take form are so integrally related to is empty space giving the feeling of marvelous Void. Because Void is a dynamic entity.

The Non-Books and pages without words or images are focused only on the light and shadows created in the empty spaces of their construction, they are composed with natural light which cause the pieces to vibrate as the light change through the course of the day. As well as an awareness of the unknown fathoms of exploration, my work demands the music of silence.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I come from a long line of artists and story tellers. My e-mail address of ”Mindsculptor1″ and my business name “Orr Visual Communications” both tend to say a lot about me as a person. My life is about Visual Communications and my intent is, through my own personal way of story telling, to try and sculpt a bit of everyone’s mind by bringing forth memories of past feelings lost in a bygone age, perhaps evoking some lost or hidden truth.

The viewer is encouraged to open his mind, step into my world and join me on my journey or just look at my work as decoration and leave it at that; no further explanation needed.

I am fascinated with the Iconic Art that I’ve seen in my travels and I believe that it offers me a great outlet for my work.

BIO

Douglas was born in Washington State and began drawing with the help of a 1st grade classmate who showed him how to really see what he was looking at in 1968. In high school Douglas was a teacher’s aid in art all three years and by 1980 he had his own art studio and gallery in downtown Aberdeen where he taught beginning drawing and painting and showcased not only his art but that of his students as well.

Douglas attended Grays Harbor College where he was the founder of the Grays Harbor Arts Society serving as its President in 1984/1985 and as Vice President in 1986. The group raised money to offer the only local artist scholarships available to students continuing their education in art.

In 1977 Douglas started working for JCPenney building newspaper and radio ads as well as dressing the stores 23 show windows. In 1986, after earning an AA degree at Grays Harbor College, Doug moved to Long Beach California to attend the graphic design program at CSULB and work as Sr. Visual Merchandising Manager for the Lakewood JCPenney. By 2002 Douglas had already been the Visual Manager of the area’s 4 largest stores and District Manager for LA County Home Lines.

In 2002 Douglas left JCPenney to open a restaurant in Long Beach that featured Fine foods, wines, art and music and by 2007, through the sale of art and music, his restaurant was putting over $25,000 a year into the hands of the local Long Beach arts community. While operating his restaurant Douglas became a board member of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association where he started the Street Decor Committee and got $25,000 to form a tree planting program.

Doug has also served as Vic President of the Long Beach Shakespeare Company from 2003 to present. Currently Doug operates ORR Visual Communications, an interior/exterior design and construction company which he has owned since 1997 and is active with the Second City Arts, DDR Projects and Long Beach Arts.
